THE STORY OF ASHTAVAKRA: EARLY LIFE AND CURSED DEFORMITY
Ashtavakra, known for his wisdom and spiritual insight, was born to the sage Kahoda and his
wife, Sujata. While still in his mother’s womb, Ashtavakra absorbed the teachings of the Vedas
as his father recited them. One day, he corrected his father’s recitation from within the womb.
Kahoda, embarrassed and angry, cursed his unborn child, causing him to be born with eight
physical deformities.
Despite his deformities, Ashtavakra grew up to be an exceptionally intelligent and spiritually
inclined child. His mother, Sujata, nurtured his intellectual and spiritual growth, teaching him
the scriptures and instilling in him a deep understanding of spiritual truths.
THE SEARCH FOR HIS FATHER:
Kahoda, after cursing his son, left to seek his fortune and became a victim of Bandin, the royal
scholar in King Janaka’s court. Bandin defeated Kahoda in a philosophical debate and,
following the court’s custom, drowned him in the river. When Ashtavakra learned of his
father’s fate, he resolved to confront Bandin and seek justice.
ASHTAVAKRA’S JOURNEY TO KING JANAKA’S COURT
At the age of twelve, Ashtavakra, accompanied by his uncle Svetaketu, journeyed to King
Janaka’s court. Despite his physical deformities and young age, Ashtavakra confidently
challenged Bandin to a debate. His extraordinary knowledge and wisdom impressed the court,
including King Janaka.
THE PHILOSOPHICAL DEBATE AND TRIUMPH
Ashtavakra’s profound understanding of the scriptures and philosophical concepts enabled
him to defeat Bandin decisively. His victory led to the release of the sages, including his father,
who had been defeated and imprisoned by Bandin. This triumph underscored Ashtavakra’s
spiritual and intellectual prowess, earning him great respect and admiration.
THE TEACHINGS OF ASHTAVAKRA
Following his victory, Ashtavakra became a revered figure in King Janaka’s court. Janaka,
himself a seeker of spiritual truth, sought guidance from Ashtavakra on various aspects of
spiritual enlightenment, leading to the discourse encapsulated in the Ashtavakra Gita.
