Sarvesh

A Lens of Courage, Compassion, and Conviction

For over 35 years, Sarvesh has been a path-breaking figure in Indian photojournalism — a storyteller who has dared to see and show the truth, and a woman who has braved both personal and professional storms with unwavering determination.

A Journey Shaped by Struggle and Strength

An award-winning photojournalist and a fierce advocate for women’s empowerment, Sarvesh transformed her life from a survivor of domestic violence to a celebrated professional in a male-dominated field. Her journey is one of courage, resilience, and determination — rising above personal tragedy to become a voice for the voiceless through her powerful photography. Today, Sarvesh is not only known for capturing some of the most defining moments in India’s contemporary history but also for mentoring young women, especially from underprivileged backgrounds, to find their strength and agency.

Early Life and Personal Struggles

Born into a middle-class family in Haryana, Sarvesh’s life took a difficult turn when she was forced into marriage at the age of 17, ending her dreams of pursuing education. For ten years, she endured severe domestic violence, abuse, and isolation, living under constant fear. At the age of 27, gathering immense courage, Sarvesh escaped her abusive marriage and sought shelter with an NGO that supports survivors of domestic violence. With their help, she began her life afresh, receiving vocational training as a beautician to earn her livelihood.

Breaking into Photojournalism

In 1990, a chance gift of a camera ignited a passion within Sarvesh that would redefine her life. What began as a hobby soon grew into an influential profession. Venturing into the male-dominated world of photojournalism, she faced scepticism and gender bias, but her resolve never wavered. Her first published photograph, capturing a student protest in Dehradun for Himachal Times, marked the start of an illustrious career that has since brought critical social issues to light.
