Dr Ved Prakash: Redefining minimally invasive, robotic and gastrointestinal surgery

Dr Ved Prakash is not just a surgeon—he is a pioneer, mentor, and visionary who has redefined the landscape of minimally invasive, robotic, and gastrointestinal surgery in India.

With over 25 years of distinguished post-M.S. surgical practice, he stands today as one of the nation’s most respected and accomplished laparoscopic and robotic surgeons, renowned for his technical mastery, innovative approach, and unwavering patient-centric ethos. Currently serving as Chairman of the Department of GI, Bariatric, Minimal Invasive, and Robotic Surgery at Asian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Faridabad,

Dr Prakash has performed more than 10,000 laparoscopic procedures, including over 10,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies with zero conversion to open surgery and zero common bile duct (CBD) injuries—a rare and extraordinary achievement that underscores his precision, experience, and commitment to safety.

A graduate of S.K. Medical College, Muzaffarpur (MBBS, 1995), and holder of an M.S. in General Surgery from S.S. Medical College, Rewa (2000), Dr Prakash built his foundation in premier institutions before honing his craft at Safdarjung Hospital and Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, New Delhi.

His early career was marked by academic excellence—earning Honours in Pharmacology and being selected for the Short Service Commission in the Army Medical Corps as a Specialist. Later, he served in key leadership roles at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Sarvodaya Hospital, and now at AIMS Faridabad, where he has transformed the department into a national hub for advanced laparoscopy, robotic surgery, and complex gastrointestinal oncology.

Dr Prakash’s clinical expertise spans the entire spectrum of minimal access surgery—from routine procedures like laparoscopic appendectomy and hernia repair to highly complex robotic oncological resections for cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, colon, rectum, uterus, cervix, kidney, and adrenal glands.

He is a master of abdominal wall reconstruction using advanced techniques like TAR (Transversus Abdominis Release), ACS (Anterior Component Separation), and PCS (Posterior Component Separation), and performs thoracoscopic (VATS) and laparoscopic surgeries for acute abdominal emergencies with remarkable outcomes. His innovations in laser surgery have brought relief to thousands suffering from piles, fissures, fistula-in-ano, pilonidal sinus, and varicose veins, offering minimally painful, same-day recovery solutions.

Beyond the operating room, Dr Prakash is a passionate educator and institution-builder. He has guided or co-guided over 18 postgraduate students, and since 2013, has successfully run a DNB (Diplomate of National Board) training program at AIMS, mentoring the next generation of surgeons.

His dedication to surgical education extends to national leadership—he organized the prestigious Annual Conference of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) in Gurgaon in 2015, and later conceived and executed LAPCON 2019, a landmark event featuring 16 live surgeries in a single day, showcasing the pinnacle of Indian surgical skill. He has also organized numerous one-day workshops and served as Mentor for Robotic Surgery Training at IRCAD India, Indore (2025)—a globally recognized centre for minimally invasive surgical innovation.

His international exposure includes a specialized observership in Laparoscopic Oncosurgery at the Academic Medical Centre (AMC), Amsterdam, Netherlands, which further sharpened his expertise in cancer surgery. Dr Prakash is also a prolific speaker and presenter, having delivered lectures, video presentations, and live demonstrations at over 30 national and international conferences, including ASICON, IAGES, and the International College of Surgeons.

His contributions have been recognized with prestigious national awards and fellowships, a testament to his standing in the surgical community:

  • Betadine Young Surgeon Award (2011) – conferred by the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) to recognize exceptional promise and achievement in surgical practice.
  • Ethicon Travelling Fellowship (2010) – awarded by ASI, enabling him to gain advanced insights into global surgical techniques and innovations.
  • Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) – a globally respected credential recognizing surgical excellence, leadership, and ethical practice.
  • Fellowship of the Association of Indian Surgeons (FAIS) – acknowledging his contributions to surgical science and patient care in India.
  • Fellowship of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons (FIAGES) – reflecting his leadership in minimal access GI surgery.
  • Diploma in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery – awarded by the Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI).
  • Certificate in Fundamental Critical Care Support – from the University of California, USA, underscoring his multidisciplinary competence.
  • Selected by the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission as a Specialist in General Surgery.
  • Honours in Pharmacology during MBBS, reflecting his early academic brilliance.

Dr Prakash has also contributed to surgical literature through peer-reviewed publications and case reports, including studies on difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic management of supernumerary ovarian tumours, plexiform neurofibroma with AV malformation, and rare anatomical anomalies. His thesis on the surgical manifestations of filariasis remains a valuable academic resource.

At Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Prakash has built a centre of excellence where cutting-edge robotics meets compassionate care. Patients from across India and abroad seek his expertise for robotic rectal prolapse repair, complex incisional and diaphragmatic hernia repairs, bariatric/metabolic surgery, and minimally invasive cancer operations—all delivered with a philosophy that “every scar matters, every life is sacred.”

A Life Member of the Association of Surgeons of India and the Indian Medical Association, Dr Ved Prakash continues to elevate the standards of surgical care in India—not just through his hands, but through his vision, his voice, and his unwavering belief in the power of minimal access surgery to heal with dignity, speed, and grace.

He is, without doubt, one of India’s foremost ambassadors of robotic and laparoscopic surgery—a healer, innovator, and true surgical statesman.
