In the pantheon of India’s leading cardiac surgeons, few names resonate with the blend of clinical excellence, military valor, academic rigor, and humanitarian vision as Brigadier (Dr) Sameer Kumar, SM. A decorated officer of the Army Medical Corps, Dr. Kumar has dedicated over three decades to advancing cardiovascular care in India—particularly within the Armed Forces—with a legacy that includes pioneering heart transplantation, establishing cutting-edge cardiothoracic units, and mentoring generations of surgeons.
From the operating theaters of conflict zones to the sterile precision of transplant suites, Dr. Kumar’s journey embodies the ethos of service: “Duty before self.” A Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at the Army Institute of Cardiothoracic Sciences (AICTS), Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, he stands not only as a surgeon of national repute but also as a transformative leader shaping the future of advanced cardiac care in India’s public healthcare system.
His surgical repertoire spans over 2,000 complex heart operations, including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacements, aortic reconstructions, lung resections, and—most notably—heart transplants. He is among the very few surgeons in India with hands-on experience in both adult and pediatric heart transplantation, and his leadership has directly contributed to making the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) one of the most active public-sector heart transplant programs in the country, with 36 successful transplants and counting.
Dr. Kumar’s career is defined by firsts:
Beyond the scalpel, Dr. Kumar is a renowned academician and educator. With over 16 years of teaching in cardiothoracic surgery, he has mentored countless postgraduate students, DNB residents, and military surgeons. He currently serves as Convener, Examiner, and Paper Setter for the Diplomate National Board (DNB) in CTVS, and is actively involved in revising the national MCh CTVS curriculum for the National Medical Commission (NMC). His influence extends to editorial leadership as Section Editor for Heart Transplant & Extracorporeal Life Support in the Indian Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Kumar answered the nation’s call once again—this time as Commandant (Director) of the 400-bed designated Military Hospital in Agra (2020–2022). Tasked with emergency infrastructure scaling and community care during the devastating second wave, his leadership ensured uninterrupted, compassionate care even amidst overwhelming demand.
His commitment to trauma care remains unwavering. A qualified paratrooper and former Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) with the elite Parachute Regiment, he served as a war-zone surgeon in Jammu & Kashmir (2001–2003) and on a UN peacekeeping mission in Sierra Leone (2000) under UNAMSIL. Recently, he renewed his trauma expertise by becoming an ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) Instructor, certified by the American College of Surgeons (June 2024).
