Born on May 6, 1957, Dr Ao’s roots lie in the Ao Naga tribe, a community rich in cultural heritage. He is the son of Late Mapu Ao, a World War II ex-serviceman. Dr Ao’s academic journey includes matriculation, marking the foundation of his intellectual pursuits. His commitment to learning and his impactful contributions to society have been further acknowledged through the conferral of honorary doctorates: an Honorary Doctorate from the International Peace University in 2011 and an Honorary Doctor of Literature (D. Litt) from California Public University, USA, in 2019. These accolades recognize the breadth and depth of his influence, extending far beyond traditional academic boundaries.

In 1982, he took on the mantle of Founder Honorary Principal of Mount Mary Higher Secondary School, a role he held with unwavering dedication. This initiative demonstrated his commitment to creating and nurturing educational institutions. His dedication to fostering higher education led to the establishment of Mount Mary College, where he again served as Founder Honorary Principal from 2011 onwards. Recognising the importance of accessible education, he served as Coordinator for the National Institute of Open Schooling for 14 years, broadening educational opportunities for countless individuals. His leadership as Chairman of the Ministry of Mount Mary Academy (an NGO) for an impressive 28 years further solidifies his role as a cornerstone of educational development in the region.
Champion of Community and Social Well-being
Dr Ao’s sphere of influence extends deeply into social and community service, reflecting a holistic approach to development. He has actively engaged in cooperative societies, serving as Chairman for 11 years and fostering economic empowerment at the grassroots level. His leadership within the Ao Union, a significant civil society organisation, includes roles as General Secretary for 6 years and President for 2 years, demonstrating his ability to unite and guide his community. He has also contributed to community organisations such as the Chumu Veteran Club (as General Secretary for 5 years) and the Ongpangkong Range for Ao Tribes (as President for 6 years).
His commitment to social welfare is further exemplified by his 14-year tenure as Treasurer of the Mission Board at Police Baptist Church and his role as a Patron of the Red Cross Society, highlighting his dedication to both spiritual and humanitarian causes. Dr Ao’s impactful social contributions have been recognised through prestigious awards, including the Global Education Excellent Award (2019), the Best Social Worker Award (2010), and the Primetime Media Award (2019). Further adding to his accolades is the Dada Saheb Palkhe Icon Gold Award received in 2025. His expertise and insights are widely sought after, making him a valued resource person for numerous social occasions.
Political Leadership and Nation Building
Dr Ao’s political career reflects his commitment to shaping governance and contributing to nation-building. He was a member of the Secretary Democratic Alliance of Nagaland in 2003 and served as a member of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland for three years, gaining experience in coalition governance. His contributions extended to the Government of Nagaland, where he served as a Member of the Political Affairs Committee for three years. In 2018, he took on the crucial role of BJP Election Campaign Chairman for the Nagaland General Assembly Election, demonstrating his strategic and leadership capabilities in the political arena. His engagement at the national level includes serving as a member of the National Railway User Consultative Committee for 2 years. He also served as Chairman of the Nagaland State Co-operative Marketing and Consumers’ Federation Ltd. (MARCOFED) from 2018 onwards, contributing to the state’s economic development. He is also associated with the Indian Chamber of International Business. Since 2020, Dr Ao has been serving as its National Vice President, East Zone.
Currently, he is the National Vice President of the BJP, a testament to his stature and influence within the ruling party.
